Each semester you will meet with your academic advisor, either face-to-face or virtually, to discuss your program of study, courses for the upcoming semester, progress toward degree completion, and answer questions you may have about your academic and professional endeavors. Your academic advisor has to "clear" you to register each semester, which happens at the time of your advising appointment.
Though all students must complete the 34 required credit hours for the degree, when you complete those credits will depend on factors such as if you were admitted during a Fall versus Spring term, your program of study, and if you are taking classes full-time or part-time. Below are additional considerations to facilitate your semester planning and academic advising appointments.
Using the sample degree plan:
Fall admitted students may start with First Fall Semester, and progress sequentially through the degree plan to Second Spring Semester.
Spring admitted students will have Spring semesters that deviate from the sample degree plan, but their First and Second Fall Semesters will likely be the same. There will also be some variation depending on your program of study (thesis or comprehensive exam route). For example, students choosing the comprehensive exam route might take one core course and two electives in their first spring semester.
Keep in mind that these are examples. It is important that you work with your advisor to determine the best plan to meet your individual and program goals.
Program of Study Form
Students may need documentation of their Program of Study (POS) for various reasons (e.g., financial aid, VA or other military benefits). The POS form lists all required coursework/credit hours, indicates program milestone path, and is signed by the student, academic advisor and/or the program director, and serves as official verification of degree requirements.
If you need such documentation, please choose the appropriate POS form linked below and complete the student portion. You'll then email the form to the program director to finalize so that you can submit to the requesting office.
Students who wish to change their milestone path or do not meet the thesis path eligibility criteria are advised to speak with their advisor/committee chair for further guidance.
