Placement Test Preparation

APSU offers several programs to help students prepare for the Accuplacer placement Test, each tailored to your specific needs.

Prior Learning Assessment

APSU encourages students to seek credit for learning achieved outside the classroom. Opportunities to gain college credit for prior learning include:

The College Board developed 34 exams in 19 subject area for AP High School Courses. Austin Peay State University honors Advance Placement (AP) credit for classes in which APSU offers an equivalent and for which the required score is achieved. APSU must receive the official scores directly from Advanced Placement/College Board.  More information can be found by either visiting College Board AP or AP Scores.
The ACT and SAT are standardized exams used as a college admissions tool. APSU will award college level credit for certain scores on either the ACT or SAT. Applicants who present an ACT English score of 28 through 30 (620-680 SAT) will receive academic credit for ENGL 1010. Applicants who present an ACT English score of 31 through 36 (690-800 SAT) will receive academic credit for ENGL 1010 and ENGL 1020. Credits will be applied to the student’s academic record after the completion of the first semester or term of enrollment. Students will receive this credit only if they have not already received college credit for ENGL 1010 and ENGL 1020.
The APSU Academic Testing Center offers 34 CLEP exams and grants ACE recommended credit for CLEP exams with a credit-granting score of 50 or above. Subject & General College Level Examinations (CLEP) gives students an opportunity to receive college credit for what they already know by earning a score equivalent to a C in the relevant course. Students seeking such credit must have earned no credit for a similar course for which they are seeking credit. For more information, visit CLEP.
DSST Exams gives students the opportunity to receive credit for learning acquired outside the classroom by earning a minimum of a B-grade equivalent on any of the 40 examinations. The APSU Academic Testing Center offers all DSST exams created except for the Principles of Public Speaking exam. More information can be found by visiting either DSST or DANTES.
Austin Peay State University honors International Baccalaureate (IB) credit for certain undergraduate classes for which an equivalent is offered and for which the required grade is achieved. More information can be found in the catalog.

Currently enrolled students may earn experiential learning credit (ELC) through the development of a learning portfolio to fulfill degree requirements. ELC is an option if credit cannot reasonably be granted through means of CLEP, departmental challenge exams, or other approved mechanisms to receive credit for prior knowledge. Please see Policy 2:015 Experiential Learning Credit . You may contact Dr. Nancy KingSanders at kingsandersn@apsu.edu if you have questions.
