The Academic Support Center provides FREE group tutoring to APSU students. Peer tutors, are fellow APSU students who have at least a 3.0 GPA and the recommendation of the department's faculty. To receive assistance students can:
- Schedule an appointment to meet with a peer tutor or the Writing Lab. Scheduled appointments are encouraged because appointments have priority over other students.
- Visit any location on a walk-in basis. Subject to availability and spacing.
- Typically, peer tutors work with no more than five students in a tutoring session.
- Advance coordination is required for groups containing ten or more people.
- Facilitated study sessions with a peer tutor may also be requested.
- Online support is available 24/7 through the link in D2L.

The ASC Writing Center is on the main floor of the Library past Starbucks. Tutors
provide FREE writing support and services to APSU students. Tutors work one-on-one
with students on any paper for any class. Walk-ins requests for assistance are always
welcome, but scheduled appointments can prevent delays.
In order to provide quality, uninterrupted service to students the Writing Center does not have a phone. This allows the staff to focus on students they are currently serving. During the semester, the Writing Center is open six days a week and only closed for holidays not including spring and fall break.
Services offered include:
- Assistance in writing all sorts of papers, regardless of subject or type of course
- Instructional assistance writing in different styles (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago, Turabian, and ASA)
- Review of written papers and guidance for correcting errors in grammar, structure, vocabulary, formatting, documenting, and other issues that are related to academic writing
Please note, that the Writing Center staff will not edit work, but instead recommend strategies for writing and improving/correction.
If a student is unable to meet one-on-one with a tutor, it is recommended they take advantage of the Writing Center’s Online Assistance. Students can submit papers for online review and receive a response usually within 24 hours. Although, the goal is to respond as quickly as possible during peak hours responses can take longer.

In an effort to expand tutoring options at Austin Peay State University, the ASC is now providing one-on-one tutoring in various subjects for a nominal fee per hour. APSU students and members of the community who wish to receive one-on-one tutoring may schedule appointments with the tutor of their choice. Tutoring sessions cost $19 per hour, and are available either online or face-to-face. Face-to-face sessions are conducted in the Writing Center, which is located on the second floor inside the Woodward Library at Austin Peay State University.

The Academic Support Center hosts several academic supportive workshops each semester for students, staff, and faculty. Faculty may also request a workshop be presented to their class by completing a request form.
A workshop schedule is decided upon at the beginning of each semester. In order to provide quality instruction at each workshop, the ASC asks interested students to register for any workshops they plan to attend, and upon confirmation the student is sent an email. If a workshop receives no reservations by the day prior to the scheduled date it is cancelled
Workshops like the GRE Prep require advanced registration and a fee to attend. The following are typical workshops topic that may be offered throughout the semester:

Fellow Classmates (Study Partners)
Another recommendation is to set up a study group with fellow classmates. Fellow classmates can be an invaluable resource. Fellow classmates can provide students with make-up notes, extra notes, and alternate explanations of concepts. If a study group cannot be formed, perhaps a study partnership can be fostered. A study partner is someone they can study with and whom the student can call if they have missed class.
Online students can foster a study partnership through Blackboard Collaborates IM software, available for download through their D2L account. Like any online instant messaging software, this program connects students with other students in their class. Direct online students to the Virtual Academic Support Center within their D2L account. Note it is located on the left side under the Calendar section.
Academic Departments Resources
The first contact a student should make when confused about course information is the instructor. Most instructors will post office hours on the class syllabus. Do not try and discuss personal or serious issues with an instructor during the five minutes before or after class. Emailing an instructor about concerns or an absence from class is also helpful.
Some Academic Departments offer additional tutoring services not maintained by the Academic Support Center. While these services vary each term, it is recommended you communicate with Department Faculty or Secretaries for more information. Many of these services can include but are not limited to: Mentoring programs, undergraduate research/study locations, in-house tutoring for specific subjects/courses, and professor hosted exam preparation sessions.
Academic Advisors are also a source of information as to resources available in a department or on campus. Often the advisor may be able to offer mentoring or be able to connect you with a student mentor.
For students questioning or struggling with their major, speaking with an advisor about options within one’s current major or other related majors offered at APSU is helpful. For students expressing the desire to change their major, speaking to an advisor in the new major department before completing the steps to change their major is suggested.
APSU 1000 is an interdisciplinary course which provides students with the foundations for a successful university experience by integrating an introduction to the liberal arts with an orientation to APSU expectations. Emphasis is given to the meaning, values, and goals of a liberal education as students engage in academic and career planning, use the tools for information literacy, develop good academic habits, and become involved in campus life.
This course is required of all Freshman and students who transfer with fewer than 12 hours earned in a college/university setting, excluding developmental courses. Students must remain enrolled until a grade of C or higher is earned. Students cannot withdraw from APSU 1000 unless they are withdrawing from the university.
Each APSU 1000 section is assigned a peer leader to connect with the students, provide guidance and direction from a student’s perspective, and assist with other functions of the class.
A Peer Leader is a successful student (i.e. 3.0 GPA or better, full-time student in good standing) who knows how to navigate the APSU campus and system. They are familiar with instructional resources such as D2L, AP Self Service, and APMail. They attend course meetings and are actively involved in campus activities staying abreast to current APSU services. Peer leaders are an excellent resource no matter the difficulty a student is having.

Austin Peay State University established the Military Student Center in 2010 to better serve the needs of the veterans, active duty/reserve personnel, ROTC students, and family members that attend the university. The center has a computer center, a lounge, and dining area to allow students to either work on homework or to relax and unwind from the day surrounded by fellow likeminded students.
The Center offers programs throughout the academic year to address the unique challenges our student population faces.
Please Note: The center is open to all students, no military affiliation is required. Everyone is welcome.

- Texts for Vets : This program helps assist APSU students’ obtain needed textbooks free of charge. APSU students, faculty, and staff can donate textbooks. These textbooks can be signed out free of charge for a semester by our students. A distribution week, prior to the start of a semester, students can come to the center and sign the books out. Priority for that week is designated for veterans, service members and family members, after the priority week the following days of the week are open to all APSU students. Once the semester is complete the students return the book to the center to be signed out by another student the following semester.

All students are welcome in the Hispanic Cultural Center! Since April 2005, the center has hosted many events and served as a place for students to connect with other students who share an interest in Hispanic culture and the Spanish language. The mission of the Hispanic Cultural Center is to develop, promote, and increase awareness of Hispanic cultures through the implementation of cultural enrichment programs, the building of working relationships between the student clubs and organizations and the Hispanic community and the creation of an environment in which the Spanish language can be celebrated and practiced.

- Heidi Leming HCC Scholarship, Amount: $500, Renewable: No, must re-apply each year. This scholarship was created in honor of Heidi Leming, former director of Student Life and Leadership. Heidi was instrumental in applying for a diversity access grant through the Tennessee Board of Regents and secured $13,000 to start a peer mentor program for Hispanic Students on campus as well as several other programs to bring greater awareness to Hispanic issues. This scholarship is awarded to any undergraduate (sophomore to senior) student at APSU who has a 2.5 cumulative GPA and has actively participated in Hispanic Cultural Center Program Events (attended at least five programs).

The Adult and Nontraditional Student Center has a computer lab, coffee, tea, refrigerator, and large screen television for relaxing and eating lunch in a congenial environment. Staff is on hand to answer questions and help facilitate the college experience for Adult and Nontraditional Students.
There are many services that are available through the ANTSC, this is a great place for students to connect and form a support system. From Family Movie Night, CoffeeBRAKE events and Luncheons, the ANTSC helps to provide APSU students with additional support.

The Center provides TI-83 calculators, laptops and netbooks for students to borrow on a semester basis. There are over 1,600 library resources available, for a three week check-out, such as books, Rosetta Stone (Portuguese, Swahili and French), Spanish Tutorial CDs and graduate school preparation (GRE, GMAT, MCAT). Stationary computers with the Respondus program are also available. In addition, the Center provides a smart board for students to use for practice of presentations. Students may stop by to eat snacks, study, relax, hang out with other students, watch TV or use the Play Station game system.
Lastly, the WNDAACC (Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center) host a wide variety of curricular and co-curricular programs that are connected to the University’s mission and vision.

The purpose of Promoting Academic Student Success (PASS 0900) is to assist students who have been placed on academic probation during their freshmen or sophomore year or who are returning from academic suspension. Participation in the PASS course is mandatory for those students.
The course is recommended also for students referred to the program by their advisor or a faculty member. The PASS Program is designed as an academic-strengthening program to provide students with the academic and personal support needed for success in college.

Austin Peay State University’s online courses offer an interactive approach to education combined with a user-friendly online platform. Even if you've never taken an online class before, you will find our online format easy to learn, navigate, and manage! Online students access Desire2Learn (D2L) and engage with instructors and classmates online in an interactive format. It is important to know that online courses are not self-paced; courses begin and end on specific dates and class work has assigned deadlines. Advising, library services, student support, and other forms of student assistance are available to online students.
If you have online course related technology issues, Distance Education is the place to go! The friendly staff can help students with navigating, adding files, participating in discussion boards or other D2L functions.
Students can benefit from a library of online tutorials that cover common functions of the D2L system. Each video guides students through a step-by-step process of the most used functions of D2L. These online tutorials are self-paced training programs.

The TRiO Student Support Services Program (SSS) at Austin Peay State University is a US Department of Education funded program. The two main purposes of TRiO Student Support Services are:
- To retain and graduate eligible project participants and
- To foster a climate supportive of the success of students whose parents did not attend or complete a four year college degree and/or are disabled and/or whose family income may hinder them from remaining in college without financial assistance to receive the full range of services and opportunities at APSU.
For students to participate in TRiO SSS, one or more of the following requirements must be met, based on the legislative requirements of the U.S. Department of Education:
- Family income meets published federal guidelines (low income)
- Neither parent earned a four-year college degree (first generation)
Referral by the Office of Disability Services (disabled)
Additionally, the student must demonstrate an academic need for services and must have the potential to benefit from the services. It is possible that students will be placed on a waiting list for services, due to limited enrollment (180 students).
Students participating in the TRiO SSS program will have the opportunity to meet with the Academic Counselor on a regular basis. The SSS staff works closely with departmental advisors, financial aid counselors, Career Services, Counseling and Testing staff, and the Office of Disability Services to ensure that TRiO participants understand the options and requirements of Austin Peay State University. Participants will receive valuable information through academic counseling, personal counseling, pre-advisement, individualized learning plans, degree audit reports, interest inventories and career/major exploration.
Tutors are assigned based upon the ability of the participant to benefit from tutoring, the availability of funding, and the availability of a qualified tutor. Qualified students may request a tutor by visiting the TRiO SSS office.
Computer Lab and Supplies
TRiO SSS offers technology to participants to enhance their course of study. The TRiO SSS Computer Lab is available Monday-Friday to participants from 8 to 4:30. Laptops and graphing calculators are available for loan. In addition, writing and research assistance is available to help Program participants find the tools that will work for them, be it on the computer, online, or from a study CD-ROM. Computer projects and PowerPoint presentations can be projected in our computer lab for participants who are preparing a class project.

As a staff, the counseling center works diligently to create an environment of mutual respect and understanding where students from every culture will feel comfortable. Services are provided to promote student learning in cultural, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual development.
Student Counseling Services offers a wide range of services and programs to assist students in maximizing their potential for success. The primary goal of the center is to promote a healthy campus environment and enhance student learning. The staff provides assistance to students who are dealing with situational crises, adjustment problems, and emotional difficulties. All sessions are confidential and free of charge for all currently enrolled APSU students. Counseling sessions are scheduled by appointment, and if there is an emergency or crisis, a counselor is available 24 hours a day through our on-call system or by walk-in when available.

Online Mental Health Screenings
Students can use an online tool that screens for depression, anxiety, alcohol, and eating disorders. This free anonymous screening is made available to all APSU students. The screening takes just a few minutes, and helps a student determine whether or not professional consultation would be helpful.

A link to on-line pamphlets from multiple universities is located on the Student Counseling Services website. The literature may be useful for students who do not want to make an appointment with Student Counseling Services. In addition, there is documentation including PowerPoints presentations that students can look and use.

The Center has a team of health care providers that are experienced in treating various medical problems. The staff includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, a pharmacist, medical office personnel, and graduate assistants. Services offer primary and preventive care, women's and men's health, immunizations and allergy shots. If, due to unforeseen circumstances, there is no provider available, there are clinics in the area that can assist students.
Care provided by Student Health Services medical staff is free to APSU students. However, each patient is charged for medications, laboratory work, procedures, and medical supplies if applicable. These costs are charged to the student’s University Health Services account. Please Note: Since this is a walk-in clinic it is strongly suggest students check in by 11:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m. to help ensure they are seen the same day.

- Well-patient physical examinations & Health Education
- Allergy injections (Monday - Friday, 7 - 11 a.m. unless your physician orders differently)
Antigens must be brought to Health Services along with written instructions from the allergist.
- Instructions must include the dosage schedule, an identifying label with the patient’s name and vial number, and the physician’s name and address. Any changes in the dosage schedule require written authorization from the allergist. We do not provide allergy testing but will refer patients seeking testing to a qualified health care provider.
- Immunizations and tuberculin testing: MMR immunizations are $65 per shot; Tuberculin skin testing is $15. We also provide hepatitis B and tetanus, which must be paid for by the student. Costs for these immunizations vary.
- Laboratory and Phlebotomy services: Various laboratory testing needed for a diagnostic work-up can be performed with a medical order. Phlebotomy services or drawing of blood is done in our office. Although most laboratory testing is ordered by Health Services personnel, patients may bring orders from their private health care provider. Most laboratory tests are sent out to a private reference laboratory.
- In-house procedures include Rapid Strep testing, urinalysis, urine pregnancy testing, fingerstick blood sugar, and microscopic evaluation (when indicated).
Medical excuses will not routinely be issued by Health Services for missed classes or examinations. Exceptions may be made for extended or acute illnesses or injuries that necessitate hospitalization or medical withdrawal.
Please note that class absence policies – excused or unexcused – are at the discretion of the faculty member.

Financial Aid is a sensitive, complicated topic and we never counsel a student on financial aid matter! In turn, we always recommending they speak to a Financial Counselor first, to understand how their actions can or will impact their financial aid status. Eligibility criteria and determination dramatically varies with each student; for this reason, you should always refer financial aid questions and concerns to this office to avoid a potential conflict.
Scholarships are an excellent way for a student to fund their education. Many scholarships are one-time only, so a student should plan on continuing their research each year. The majority of scholarships offered by APSU can be applied for using the online scholarship application, but many are available apart from that application.
